ABSTRACT

The Khārijites, the Murji'a and the Wa'īdīya Whoever rebelled against the legitimate imām accepted by the people is called a Khārijite, whether this rebellion took place at the time of the Companions against the rightfully guided imāms, or against their worthy successors, or against the imāms of any time. The Murji'a is a separate group who held distinctive views about faith and works, though they agreed with the Khārijites on some points concerning the imāmate. The Wa'īdīya, on the other hand, form part of the Khārijites, holding that if a Muslim commits a grave sin he is an unbeliever and will be condemned to hell forever. We have, therefore, dealt with their views in our treat ment of the Khārijites.
