ABSTRACT

PHILAEistraditionallyconsideredthemostbeautiful templeintheNileValley,butthisisduemoretoitssituationthantothearchitecture;andsincethepalm-groves, whichconstitutedmorethanhalfitscharm,havebeen cutdownthetemplesnowhavevalueonlyasexamples ofPtolemaicandRomanarchitecture.Thetemples,however,canonlybeseenwhenthewaterislow(pl.XLIV,2); fromDecembertoMaytheriverisheldupbythebarrage andthetemplesaresocompletelyfloodedthatonlythe architravesandcornicesarevisible.
