ABSTRACT

This image was created as a follow-up to my artwork entitled Selfillumination. I wanted to create a picture that not only took the esthetic message from the first one, but also followed up on the story. The first work of this series was a light bulb that was trying to plug itself in (Fig.01). The message I was trying to convey was that everybody should try to get the very best out of themselves. This message I aimed to communicate through the use of minimalist elements, and a sterile, cool-looking image. Through Selfilllumination 2 I wanted to show the possible future of the light bulb, if he had achieved his goal to “illuminate” himself. The little fellow succeeds with his plan to get out, but then faces other problems. As soon as he starts to illuminate himself, moths begin to annoy him – flying around him – suggesting he could go crazy. The initial idea came from a request by 3D World Magazine (Jim Thacker and Shaun Weston) to create a picture within the Selfillumination universe that perfectly suited the cover of their magazine. I would like to thank them for this fantastic opportunity – to be on the cover of 3D World Magazine was a great honor for me. I hoped to create a worthier follow-up to my first Selfillumination picture, and, who knows, perhaps it will become a trilogy…
