ABSTRACT

The Persians of Transcaucasia are not directly connected with the Persian communities in Central Asia. Trade, the close proximity of Persia and the fact that this region was often under Safavid rule accounts for their presence in Armenia, Azerbaidzhan, Daghestan and Georgia. In 1926 there were just over 20,000, nearly half of them in Azerbaidzhan. The Persians in these areas are no longer listed separately in the census. Possibly some were repatriated to Iran in the late 1930s (despite their Soviet citizenship), like the Iranian nationals; others have certainly been assimilated. See also p. 357.
