ABSTRACT

This chapter presents in-depth discussions about technological paths made of physical devices such as sensors, virtual spaces, and displays. It discusses how each element of the path plays a specific role inside the viewer’s experience. The idea of working with telephones, ground lines, or cellular phones was inspired by watching an interactive television experiment. Using a telephone seemed to be an easy way for a television viewer to interact with on-air content while watching TV. The script illustrated on page 362 shows how to control an interactive character during a telephone call. Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) can be used to create music and to exchange data between a MIDI keyboard and a computer or between MIDI-compatible software. A data glove can process gestures from the hand and turn them into data for navigation inside a virtual world. A three-screen display can be created from a single camera with the proper depth of field or with a node of cameras.
