Thereareseveralmodesofopeningtheshell,butmost commonlyitisdonewithaclasp-knife,andthepearlisfound embeddedinthemuscularportionofthefish,whereitis attachedtotheshell.Theshellsarealsosometimespiledupon shore,wheretheheatofthesundecomposesthefish,andthe pearlsareatonceobtained.
