GovernmentincomerosesteadilyfromRs3,717,000in 1939-40toRs5,634,000in1945-6andtherewasconsiderable progressinthefieldsofhealthandeducation.InJanuaryanewwing forwomenwasaddedtothestatehospitalandafurtherwardandan administrationblockopenedin1942.Newdispensariesweresetup insomeofthevillages.Asmallpoxscarein1941wascheckedby massinnoculation.In1940therehadbeen3girls'schoolswith450 pupilsandin1945therewere5with1,139.ThePAreportedthat suchwastheinterestthatataplayputonbytheGirlsschool attractedmorethan500ladies,inadditiontothosewhohadbeen invited-oneofenormoussizewasobservedsweepingthepolice outofherwaytoobtainentry.ManamaCollegewasopenedtogive thebestofthe13-14year-oldboysthreeyears'furthereducationin English.Hostelaccommodationwasprovidedforthosewhosehomes wereinvillages.Tocopewiththegreaternumberssometeachers werebroughtfromEgypt.
