ABSTRACT

It was my illness in S ina i that brought me first to Je rusa lem and then to Jer icho. W h e n st i l l i n E n g l a n d I had appl ied to go to Je r i cho to j o i n Professor Gars tang to catalogue his flints, but fortunately for h i m J o a n Crowfoot (later J o a n Crowfoot Payne), who had dealt w i th these the previous year, decided to return and do this work again. However , when he heard that I was convalescing i n Jerusalem, he asked me down to j o i n his d ig . I was extremely glad to do this as it reduced my financial l i ab i l i ty for board i n Je rusa lem and enabled me to take part in the excavation of the pre-pottery Neo l i th i c levels of Je r icho .
