ABSTRACT

ThequestionofthedisappearanceofSenenmut,whoseentirecareerhasconsistently beeninterpretedinlightofHatshepsut'sreign,hastakenasmanytwistsandturnsas thatoftheTuthmosidesuccession,yetinspiteofnumerousinformedsuggestionsit remainsentirelyunsettled. 1TheviewthatSenenmut'sdeathwasprobablyrelatedto asuddenandviolentfallfromroyalfavor,takenforgrantedearlierinthecentury, whenmostofhisknownmonumentsdisplayedsomeevidenceofdeliberateattack, hasbeenreplacedbymorecautiousopinions,dueprimarilytoanawarenessthatitis insufficientonlytonotedamagetoamonument--thattheparticularkindsofdamage arecrucialinascertainingwhenandbywhomthevandalismwascommitted. Chapter1containsabriefsummaryofpaststatementsonthefallofSenenmut. Furthermore,Schulman'slucidrecapitulationofthehistoryofthisquestion2makeit superfluoustodomorethanmentiontheconclusionsofearlierscholarsanddiscuss thelatestproposalsregardingthequestion,primarilytheviewsofSchulmanhimself andMeyer.
