ABSTRACT

According to his mother, Nyaniba, Kwame Nkrumah was born in 1912, although the Roman Catholic priest who baptised him puts the date at 1909. In any event, this future leader of Ghana was born at a turning point in his country's history. Little more than ten years before Nkrumah's birth the British had defeated the Asante and sent their leader, the Asantehene, into exile. Ghana was now a fully fledged British colony and was accordingly renamed the Gold Coast.
