ABSTRACT

A downloadable sound file vocalizing key bullet points on the media law of UK elections. 7.0 podcast downloadable https://soundcloud.com/ comparativemedialaw/chapter-7-bullet-points-the-uk

The operation of an election or referendum campaign does not suspend or amend existing primary or secondary media law so the coverage of ‘hustings’ when open and accessible to the public will come under the libel defence of qualified privilege subject to explanation or contradiction for public meetings and press conferences. No qualified privilege will attach to the election addresses distributed by candidates. Extreme political rhetoric that strays into the area of stirring up racial hatred or hatred on religious grounds and gender discrimination are offences under the Racial and Religious Hatred Act 2006, and Public Order Act 1986. The offence of glorifying terrorism arises out of the Terrorism Act 2006.
