ABSTRACT

The history of education as a discipline within our universities is a complex one; it is a play (a comedy, even) with two main storylines. Sometimes the players work hand in hand, heroically struggling together to establish legitimacy in the hierarchical world of the university; more often than not, they fi ght amongst themselves or live in uneasy compromise. As we will see in this and the next chapter, each storyline has its own history, carried by different players and different institutions even today.
