ABSTRACT

Ten years ago we started this chapter by remarking ‘It is perhaps necessary to explain at the outset why we have dedicated a whole chapter to the subject of supply management, and what we mean by the term’. In the intervening period the importance of developing expertise in supply ‘chain’ management has become accepted in every part of business and the subject is now amongst the most popular research topics in the area. It is also of crucial importance in global operations, including in the pursuit of sustainability (see Chapter 5).
