ABSTRACT

In the previous chapter we touched upon the issue of housing patterns among foreign workers, and will now look at this question in greater detail. Many companies in the manufacturing and construction sectors offer accommodations to their workers, and in these cases the living quarters are often adjacent to the work sites. Many shugakusei are also housed in dormitories owned by their language schools. Workers without access to such housing must seek out their own living arrangements, and they tend to find themselves extremely limited in their choices, as they must find places which are both low-cost and which will accept them. The search for housing often poses a greater challenge than looking for a job.
