ABSTRACT

In another incident, a Myanmarese (Burmese) citizen was discovered smoking a cigarette in the toilet at the Regional Immigration Office in Otemachi, Tokyo, and was taken into a room. Then, 1) five or six officers surrounded him and one of them began verbally abusing him; 2) another ten employees appeared, slapped him repeatedly, and then twisted his right arm; and 3) he was beaten and kicked repeatedly. He finally sought assistance from the Human Rights Protection Committee of the Japan Federation of Bar Associations, and was given a medical examination. The doctor estimated that he would require two weeks of medical treatment (Japan Times, 31 May 1990).
