ABSTRACT

Phizo received the news of the signing of the Shillong Accord in silence. The event came as little shock to him because Keviyally had kept him abreast of the agony in the NFG camp and forewarned him of the outcome. Adinno, his daughter, recalls how he behaved that fateful day:

In another room Phizo was soon writing one of his famous epistles. His subject was 'Our responsibility':

From all accounts Phizo did take the news calmly. He did not blame the messenger of bad news. He understood his brother's motives in the lead~up to the accord at Chedema.· There had always been a possibility that India might, at the last minute, be magnanimous in victory and invite him to return unconditionally. No such invitation ever came, not even a sounding-out by the Indian high commissioner's office in London. Just an arrogant silence.
