ABSTRACT

Kamose, who describes military campaigns to drive the Hyksos out of Egypt, and in an important document, the Kamose stela, recounts the capture of a letter from the Hyksos king Auserra to a king of Kush in which it is suggested that they form an alliance to divide Egyptian territory between them. In the translation of Labib Habachi the text reads,

I captured his message beyond the oasis going southward to Kush in a written letter. I found on it the following in writing by the hand: Auserre, son of Re Apophis greets my son, the ruler of Kush. Why have you risen as a ruler without letting me know? Have you seen what Egypt has done against me? The ruler who is in it, Kamose, is attacking me on my soil, but I am not attacking him in the way he had done against you. He chose the two lands to persecute them, my land and yours, and he has ravaged them. Come, navigate downstream, do not be afraid. Behold he is here with me; there is no one who will be waiting for you in this Egypt, for I will not let him go until you have arrived. Then we shall divide the towns of this Egypt.
