ABSTRACT
Fundamentally important for American philosophers is determining what philosophy is and what the philosopher is to do. Many American philosophers insist on the practical value of speculative inquiry. We saw this in the work of Franklin in his quest to understand ethics for practice. We saw it in revolutionaries like Paine and Goldman who did not spin fanciful theories or abstract principles simply to know something about freedom, rights, and justice, but to do something about them.
