ABSTRACT

Islam teaches its followers to have concern for their natural surroundings. The roots of Islamic teachings on environmental practices can be found in the Islamic Holy Books, the Quran and the Hadith. Professors Yusuf Qardhawi (2001) and Ali Yafie (2006) have worked on the writing of an Islamic basic rule, a Fiqh, specifically regarding the environment. A Fiqh is a part of Islamic law that explains many activities and practices required to be understood and implemented by Muslims. In his book, Qardhawi (2001) explains that maintaining and protecting the environment have close correlations with many basic Islamic teachings such as the Islamic foundation (Tauhid), Islamic morals and behavior (Akhlaq), the Islamic basic rule (Fiqh), Islamic purposes (maqashid syar'iyyah), and the knowledge of Quran and Hadith. Islam teaches its followers to do good deeds with the only expectation being a reward from God in the Hereafter. Muslims believe that God created the universe for the good of humankind, with all of nature following His will.

And the heaven He has raised high, and He has set up the Balance. One may not transgress the balance. One must observe the weight with equity so as to not make the balance deficient. And the earth He has put for the creatures. Therein are fruits, date-palms producing sheathed fruit-stalks [enclosing dates]. And also corn, with leaves and stalk for fodder, and sweet-scented plants. Then which of the Blessings of your Lord will you both deny?
