ABSTRACT

This chapter will examine dilemmas and prospects for Algerian teacher education at present, and for the next decade or so. It will be argued that not only should policy for teacher education be directed towards developing future teachers who need to be conversant with new information technologies, but also that teachers should be trained to be better professionals with a wide set of knowledge and skills to support new ideas in teaching and learning. The chapter will first examine the socio-political and educational background to Algeria, and then discuss current issues and dilemmas in teacher education. The chapter will conclude with an examination of the prospects for the future training and education of teachers.
