ABSTRACT
Four key areas of teacher education are identified in this chapter within the context of present dilemmas and future prospects in teacher education. The four areas include:
theories and ideologies of teacher education;
the control of teacher education by the state, with reference to the role of schools and higher education;
cultural perspectives and the education of teachers;
the notion of teacher education as an ongoing process.
