ABSTRACT

In this chapter we will examine a number of key areas related to the status, problems and prospects of teacher education in India. The first part of the chapter will examine the context to current issues underlying Indian teacher education, and this will be followed by a more detailed discussion of the structure and processes that affect the training and status of teachers. The author will further examine the relevance of programmes and the role of teachers in urban and rural areas. The final part of the chapter will identify the future prospects for teacher education with reference to the creation of new institutions for improving the quality of teaching in the country.
