ABSTRACT

Taking the MSc in Environmental and Development Education at South Bank University, London as a case study, this chapter provides snapshots, from an NGO perspective, of what happens when two very different cultures come together in the design and delivery of a Masters level course. The central message is that educators need to consider how visions and reality are likely to collide in such partnerships and thus, where possible, to learn from the experience of others. In the case study featured there is, on the one hand, the story of a successful, innovative and popular course and on the other, the more difficult subtext of what was involved in reaching such a goal. All integration within the state system is strategically important to futures- orientated education, but it needs to be, as far as possible, on terms that everyone understands and agrees to.
