ABSTRACT

Australia is a country with an Asian climate, a British legal and parliamentary system, and an American style of State and Federal organization. Despite this borrowing, Australia, 200 years after British settlement, is also very much itself. Health education in Australia, as with health education everywhere, tends to reflect the values of the country, forged from this historical background. Later local influences include forty years of steady immigration from all European, and a few South East Asian countries. The population is now sixteen million; about that of Greater London, in area larger than all Europe, concentrated in five large and about twenty smaller cities. Thus the overall health profile is that of a modern, urban industrialized country with a generally European lifestyle.
