ABSTRACT

There is no single word or phrase in Danish to describe health education. This has resulted in a very diverse pattern of activities and agencies related to health education. Early strategies focused on disease rather than health. The Danish Committee for Health Education was formed in 1964. It organized a series of seminars from which the ‘Health pedagogic movement’ emerged. This gave a broader context to health education. The National Prevention Council, formed in 1979, has a health promotion function and works in conjunction with other agencies. The AIDS campaign from the National Board of Health is described. Since 1976, health education has increased in importance politically. Future trends, which indicate an increasingly important role for health education, are outlined.
