ABSTRACT

Yi Cha-y n's senior grandson, Yi Cha-i lost his life in an attempt to foil Sukchong, so his cousin Yi Cha-gy m was now in a dominant position. He gave his eldest daughter to be the wife of Sukchong's son Yejong, and their son, Injong, having spent much of his life at the Yi home, was at the age of 12 provided with two of Cha-gy m's younger daughters as wives, and his relatives and supporters occupied many key posts and continually enlarged their estates. We are given a glimpse of their world in the writings of a twelfth-century visitor from Song China, Xu Jing.
