ABSTRACT

He had planned to make a combined attack with the other Ch lla commander Yi g-gi, but before the latter had arrived he received a warning of the Japanese approach from W n Kyun, so, without waiting, he sat off with his 20-odd turtle boats. The big ship with the fire-breathing dragon's head led the way, followed by his own flagship and after two days they met up with W n Kyun's three ships. At Sa Ch' n, at the head of a deep inlet just below Chinju, they found a dozen vessels of the Japanese advance guard anchored along the shore while on the hilltop above they were busily setting up a camp with a dazzling display of red and white flags. The ebbing tide made it difficult to go straight in, but by pretending to flee he enticed them to man their boats and then on the turn of the tide sent his big turtle ship amongst them with all its guns blazing. The others followed it and although they came under heavy fire from the hills on either side and Yi Sun-sin, with a bullet through his shoulder,

was amongst the wounded, they destroyed all the enemy ships without losing any of their own.
