ABSTRACT

IN this brief concluding chapter, history converges with the present. Covering only the last twodecades, it is inevitably more speculative and eclectic in the trends and connections it traces, grouping its subject matter thematically rather than in a tidy narrative. Its subject matter, contrary

to Lemaire’s confident assertions of final victory in 1983, is a work in progress. Although it is not

yet clear whether 1989 will come to seem as decisive a turning-point in the Conservation Movement

as 1789, we are undeniably witnessing another fundamental shift of values in the heritage world.
