ABSTRACT

Malaysia and two states in the northern part of the island of Borneo or Kalimantan. A Federal Territory makes up the fourteenth entity within the federation. The country has a population of approximately 14.3 million (1980 estimate) with an annual growth rate of 2.6 per cent. The population is cosmopolitan, with the indigenous communities (Malays and other Bumiputras1 ) comprising 54 per cent of the population, the Chinese 34 per cent, the Indians (including Sri Lankans, Bangladeshis and Pakistanis) 9 per cent, and the remaining 2 per cent comprising the Europeans and Eurasians, Indonesians, Philippinos and other Asian communities. The female/male ratio is approximately 98.3 females for every 100 males on average (1979 estimates).
