The Service Informatique du Ministere de l'Education du Quebec (SIMEQ) was created in 1968. Its mandate was to install and maintain a centralized computer network' linking the Ministry's mainframe' computers - which in 1980 were an IBM 370/168 and an IBM 3033 - to the terminals" located in the school boards and cegeps (1) across the province, and to provide the users with software" for the different tasks of educational management. From 1968 to 1980 numerous management packages were written. They cover payroll, scheduling, school transportation, supplies, Ministry exams and student files.
