ABSTRACT
The Forme of Cury> a manuscript recipe roll from the household of King Richard II dated about 1391, reveals the late medieval preoccupation with ritual, exoticism and grandeur. l ike the architects of the Gothic cathedral, Richard's cooks manifest the impulse to transcend the mundane by casting edible ingredients into aesthetic form through the manipulation of colour and shape.
