ABSTRACT

The Wola call oven pits ongort, and each house yard has a small one, which is simply cleaned of any rubbish and stones when people wish to use it. The trenches for large ovens on the other hand are situated on the park-like clearings where people stage important events, and as they are not often used men have to dig them out for each occasion. The oven described here follows the pattern of the small household one, which people also prepare when working in their gardens, and it requires a circular, saucer-shaped pit about 3 feet in diameter and 1 foot in depth at the centre (Fig. 1).
