ABSTRACT

Summary: The rationale for including a chapter referring to Asian non-formal education is considered, along with the diversity within the Third World. The state of educational provision and of thought about this provision in the region is briefly described, including the increasing acceptance of non-formal education as a possible road for the future. Aspects of Australian tradition and outlook are summarized, especially its stance towards Asia and the status of recurrent education in Australia. This suggests a basis for exchange of ideas between Australia and countries of the region, including some existing means and modes for such exchange. Issues of importance to Asian non-formal education and Australian recurrent education alike are identified.
