ABSTRACT

We chose the University of Buenos Aires and the period 1956–66 for three reasons: first, Buenos Aires University holds a position of great importance among the country's universities; second, that era is the closest to our day of those periods noted for the pioneering spirit; third, and most important, because the energy expended in the direction of innovation during this time was possibly the widest in range, the most profound and most consistent in the history of the Argentine universities. The initiatives were aimed as much at defining the constitution and function of the university vis-á-vis society in general, as at modernizing its internal operation.
