ABSTRACT

Anyone who has been at the Hatfield College in Hertfordshire, England, during its comparatively brief yet hectic existence might be forgiven if, when asked ⋆ What is going on, and where do you go from here?’ he begs to be allowed to pass the question. So much has happened in less than twenty years of growth, and so much is still happening, that it is difficult to know how or where to begin to describe the College today. No institution of higher education can be in a state of rest: it must change or it will atrophy, and no one at Hatfield would acquiesce in that. In trying to describe it as it is today I must refer not only to the past but to our hopes for the future — and here we are likely to be beset by hazards yet unknown and probably beyond our control.
