New information is constantly being amassed and much of what we currently know, based chiefly on

pictorial representations and old excavations, will undoubtedly be subject to extensive revision. Toponyms aside, the ancient Egyptian references to the subject of towns and cities are few, and

there appears to have been little distinction made between the various classes of settlements (i.e., niwt, "city," dmi, "town," and wlJit, "village,,).98 The term IJwt appears to refer to centers of royal adrninistration.99
