I see no signs of any relaxation of the bonds that tie education to occupation. On the contrary, they appear to be growing stronger. The ticket obtained on leaving school is for a life journey. The man with a third-class ticket who later feels entitled to claim a seat in a first-class carriage will not be admitted even if he is prepared to pay the difference. ¹
