ABSTRACT

The origins of the present pattern of educational structure in India which includes the university as a characteristic type of educational institution can be found in the period of British rule. When significant territorial acquisition took place after the middle of the eighteenth century the British Government in India showed concern for education. The British Parliament was persuaded as early as in 1813 to authorize an expenditure of £10,000 annually for the 'revival and improvement of literature, and the encouragement for the learned natives of India, and for the introduction and promotion of a knowledge of the sciences among the inhabitants of the British territories in India'.
