(Yangyi is about 275 miles south-south-west of Peking. Professor and Mrs. Crook lived there for about eight months in 1947–48. They returned there to spend the summers of 1959 and 1960, after the commune had been set up. The commune is about 33 miles by 10 in area, along ‘the generally dry Min River’.
