ABSTRACT

A widely accepted view in Japan explains the development of organizational form in the following steps (Sakakibara 1989):

functional form emerged first;

then, multidivisional form was adopted;

thereafter, many companies moved to matrix form (including Strategic Business Unit); and

recently, the more decentralized form like bunsha form (a new form developed by Matsushita Electric Corporation) or amoeba form (a new form developed by Kyocera, a Japanese Ceramic manufacturer) has been quite popular.
