ABSTRACT

The development of multisensory storytelling took as its starting point the expressed need in the late 1990s of family carers, teachers and other professionals for the development of a holistic context which would provide an enjoyable and meaningful activity with developmental significance for people with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities (PIMD). PAMIS responded to this demand by developing the work of Chris Fuller at Bag Books (Fuller, 1990, 1999 and see Chapter 9) through the creation of individualised, personal stories. By individualisation we mean not only a narrative of personal significance but also a choice of materials that are appropriate in terms of age, sensory characteristics and relevant interactions.
