ABSTRACT

Seven years after the publication of ‘The Temple’, the devotional poet Christopher Harvey proclaimed his debt to Herbert on the title-page of his distinctly uncertain performance, ‘The Synagogue’ (‘In imitation of Mr. George Herbert’). The collection of twenty-four poems begins, after ‘The Dedication’, with a sustained tribute to Herbert, first in Latin, and next in English as given below.
