ABSTRACT

The most intriguing interpretation of Herbert – so far at least as format is concerned – was ventured in an imaginary conversation between himself and his brother, Lord Herbert of Chirbury. The author was Margaret Fuller, a member of the Transcendental circle who was at once one of the more fascinating personalities in mid-century America and ‘one of the best critics of her century’ (Margaret V. Allen, ‘The Achievement of Margaret Fuller’ (University Park, Pa., 1979), p. 79). See also above, p. 25.
