ABSTRACT

Palmer’s edition of Herbert’s poems in 1905 (see headnote to No. 65) continued over the ensuing years to occasion reviews and essays. The widely respected critic and essayist A. Clutton-Brock provided one such essay, notable for his acceptance of the conflict at the heart of Herbert’s poetry and for his several excellent judgements inclusive of his rejection of the notion of the poet’s quaintness. See also above, p. 32.
