Extract from John Dennis, The Impartial Critick (1693), Dialogue II. Beaumont and Freeman are discussing the tragic hero. Dennis (1657-1734) was a minor poet and dramatist, but one of the most considerable and independent critics of his time. The Impartial Critick was a rejoinder to Rymer’s Short View of Tragedy (1692).
