ABSTRACT

Whilst issues of the desirability of a critical student voice and the on-going legacies of the colonial past can be said to have set, for certain parts of 2012 and 2013, the tone of some debates about politics in Malaysia, there were other concerns with a more direct effect on the European Studies discipline here. 2013 was the year of ‘GE13’ – the thirteenth General Election since the creation of Malaysia in 1963. GE13 has been called the ‘most closely contested’ election ever (Rahman, 2013: 7); it was held on 5 May 2013.
