ABSTRACT
In February 1979, the Iranian revolution overthrew the Pahlavi monarchy, which had ruled Iran since 1926. That event subsequently became known as the Islamic revolution, although it had a much wider ideological and social base than religion. It was only further developments after February 1979 that led to common usage of the term ‘Islamic revolution’ to characterise what was happening in Iran at that period.
