Lord David Cecil (1902–86) was fellow of New College Oxford 1939–69, and author of books on Cowper, Scott, and others. In the Introduction to the Oxford Book of Christian Verse he favourably compared the religious verse of the second half of the nineteenth century with that of the seventeenth. From Christina Rossetti he moved on to Hopkins.
