The author (see Dunne, Hopkins Bibliography) was Edward Shanks (1892–1953), an established poet at this date and winner of the Hawthornden Prize for Imaginative Literature, 1919. Assistant-editor of the London Mercury 1919–22, he was attacked, along with its editor Sir John Squire, in Osbert Sitwell’s anti-Georgian Jolly Old Squire (1922).
