This unsympathetic review seems surprising in a journai that was to become one of the most influential and progressive literary magazines in the United States, but, as William Wasserstrom points out (The Time of the Dial, Syracuse, 1161963), its editorial policy was still in process of reorganisation in 1919. Along with the Criterion in England, the Dial gave first publication to Eliot’s The Waste Land in November 1922.
